For buyers
- See the car in person, in daylight, at the seller’s home or business address before paying anything.
- Check the MOT history for free on GOV.UK using the registration number: www.gov.uk/check-mot-history.
- Ask to see the V5C logbook. The name and address on it should match the seller and the place you are viewing the car.
- Check that the VIN on the car matches the V5C.
- Consider a vehicle history check for outstanding finance, write-off or theft markers before you buy.
- Never pay a deposit or the full price by bank transfer for a car you have not seen. Be wary of anyone who says they are abroad or asks you to use a courier or escrow service you have not heard of.
- Take a test drive only with valid insurance.
For sellers
- Do not hand over the keys or V5C until payment has fully cleared in your account. Bank transfers can be reversed if fraudulent.
- Be cautious of buyers who offer more than the asking price or want to pay via unusual methods.
- Accompany buyers on test drives and check they are insured.
- Tell the DVLA you have sold the vehicle: www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle.
